barsoom: Surface of Mars, photographed by Mars Express, 31st December 2005.

Image runs from 62°S 125°E to 77°S 115°E; about 910 km. The 6th image shows the east rim of Burroughs Crater (with a smaller crater superposed on it). The 8th image shows the west side of Rayleigh Crater.

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) wrote a series of novels set on a fantasy version of Mars, and also invented the character of Tarzan.

John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh (1842-1919) was a physicist, and who discovered Rayleigh scattering - which is, amongst other things, why the sky is blue.

Composite produced from visible light images, but colours are not balanced naturalistically.
